08/01/08 - PICTURES & MEMORIES OF CAPITOLA, CA
NEW BRIGHTON STATE BEACH 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Capitola, CA— Members of the public who have enjoyed New Brighton State Beach through the years are invited to submit snapshots of family and friends enjoying the park. Photos will be exhibited at the park August 15- 27 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of New Brighton State Beach.

Photos might include camping, beach parties, weddings, fishing, surfing, Wingspread demonstrations, wildlife viewing, or Pot Belly Beach activities. Photos are being accepted now through August 1st. More information is available at (831) 464-5620 or email jsbarnes@parks.ca.gov.

An anniversary event, “Memories of Capitola,” on August 16 will provide opportunities to meet others who submit photos. The celebration will be a full day of family events, including a walk and talk with Author/Professor Sandy Lydon and a presentation by Capitola City Historian and Author Carolyn Swift.

One of the busiest state parks in California, New Brighton’s campsites are fully booked months in advance and its calm beach provides an excellent family destination throughout the summer. Camping information is available on the web at www.parks.ca.gov.

07/31/08 - Summer Activities for JULY 2008--Events, Hikes, Campfires, Junior Rangers
“Independence Day 1908 Celebration” at
Wilder Ranch State Park
Friday, July 4, 2008
11:00 AM-4:00 PM

Travel back in time at Wilder Ranch State Park on Wednesday, July 4, to experience an Independence Day Celebration 1912-style. Festivities will run from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

At 11:45 meet at the apple orchard in front of the Highway 1 tunnel and join in the parade. Bring a musical instrument or noisemaker, dress in 1912 costume, or pull a decorated wagon. Parade walks through the complex to front lawn for flag raising, speeches, and patriotic music.
Try the cake walk, historic lawn games, draft horse wagon rides, ice cream cranking, crafts to make, and listen to live 1912 music. There is food and drink for sale; strawberry shortcake, dill pickles, watermelon, root beer and hand squeezed lemon aide, or bring your own picnic to spread out on the lawn. Bratwurst USA will be selling BBQ chicken dinners and other cuisine at family prices. Bank will exchange your 2007 dollars into 1912 tokens.

Wilder Ranch docents will be demonstrating 1912 dairy-ranch work, including woodstove baking, blacksmithing, and vegetable gardening. Walk through the newly renovated historic Meder Ranch house. Visit the Ranch animals. Musicians will include the Society Orchestra, Santa Cruz City Band playing patriotic music, Apple Jam, and our own home-grown 5 Ms performing popular 1912 songs.

Wilder Ranch State Park is located 2 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. The event is free; parking is $6.00 per car. For more event information, call (831) 426-0505.

A Special Event!

“Tales of the Basin: A Weekend of Storytelling”
at
Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27, 2008

This annual event spotlights storytellers, special children’s performers and the tradition of spinning-a-yarn beside the evening fire. South Bay Storytellers present the evening campfire program on Saturday night. More information is available at (831)338-8883.

Ocean View Summit Hike
Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 am
Join docent David Auerbach on this fascinating exploration through a variety of habitats. This is one of our most diverse hikes—you travel by a mountain stream, through oak woodlands, into chaparral and back to the redwoods. You’ll discuss forests, flowers and fires on a six-mile, four-hour hike. This somewhat strenuous ascent is rewarded with ocean views on a clear day. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Boating, Dancing, Dining and More!—Big Basin in its Heyday
Saturday, July 26 at 12:30 p.m.
Big Basin was a very popular tourist resort in the 1900s. The park had a hotel, store, post office, barbershop, dance hall, tennis courts, a lake and more! Take a fascinating tour with Dan Friend, a ranger here in the 1970s, and “see” Big Basin as it was in those vibrant early days. This is a one-mile, two-hour walk. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Big Basin “Nature Tails”
Saturday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m.
A world of animal songs and stories presented for children of all ages by local storytellers. Meet at the Campfire Center.

Storytellers’ Showcase
Saturday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Sit back and experience an old-fashioned evening steeped in the oral tradition, as our guest storytellers the weave their yarns in our historic amphitheater. Meet at the Campfire Center. Evening begins with fire lighting and marshmallow roasting at 7:30 p.m.; program begins at 8:00. Bring a flashlight. Good dogs welcome!

Footsteps of the Pioneers
Sunday, July 27 at 12:00 noon
Join docent Doreen Devorah on an easy three-mile, two-hour roundtrip hike to the site of the Maddock Cabin. Enjoy a beautiful walk through the redwoods and hear stories of the early settlers and their life deep in the forest. Bring water. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Friday, July 11 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM
Bring a picnic dinner, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, and tortilla toppings (salsa, cheese, butter...mmmm!) From 5:30 to 7:00 there will be tortilla making on the comal and live music to enjoy. From 7:00 to 8:00 enjoy storytelling and songs around the fire for the whole family.

Beach Ecology Junior Ranger Programs

Meet in the lower beach day use parking lot, for ages 7 – 12. Take a nature walk to discover more about the western snowy plover, an endangered shorebird that nests in the sand. Find out why its important to keep the beach clean to help the snowy plover survive. This activity takes approximately 1 hour and you will earn rewards towards the Junior Rangers program.

The center explores the many Pacific Rim migrations, both by people and by creatures of the air and sea. Is your front door located in a redwood forest? Take a day to “go home to the redwoods” and find out about the creatures that live among the world’s tallest trees. Meet State Parks Interpreter Mountain Mike at the Mill Ox trailhead to wander the redwood forest along the banks of Little Butano Creek.

Guided Tours of the Ancient Redwood Grove

Meet at the Visitor Center
Enjoy one of California’s most scenic hikes on this one hour guided walk among the tallest living things on earth, the coastal redwoods. A park docent will share local lore and ecology as you refresh your spirit among 1,000 year old redwood trees. This trail is also stroller and wheelchair accessible. . Summer Junior Ranger Programs
Thursday through Sundays in July at 4:00 p.m.
Meet at the Campfire Center. Campground entrance off Graham Hill Road
This one-hour program developed for children ages 7 to 11 will include active games, nature crafts, hikes and scientific activities. This amazing opportunity for children will give them the skills to be a junior ranger complete with books and active rewards programs at other California State Parks.

Summer Bugs by Night
All Fridays in July at 8:45 p.m.
Meet at the Campfire Center. Campground entrance off Graham Hill Road
Bring the family and learn about the wonderful world of bugs! The first part of this program is devoted to showing the many different forms that bugs come in! Then when it gets dark, we will move over to our special "bug light" and see who comes to visit! Meets at the campfire center where the group will be escorted to the observation deck a short time later.

Summer Astronomy Programs—All Sundays in July at 9:00 p.m.
Explore the summer night sky at the observation deck. Constellations, planets, galaxies, and other interstellar space objects will be viewed with the aid of a telescope and laser pointer! Meets at the campfire center at 9:00 p.m. where the group will be escorted to the observation deck. Cloudy skies will cancel program.

Summer Campfire Programs—
All Saturday Evenings in July at 8:30 p.m.
Located at the Campfire Center. Campground entrance off Graham Hill Road
Each week a different aspect of the cultural and natural history of the park will be highlighted through songs, skits, stories, and a slideshow.

Summer programs are open to the public and are offered June through August. There is a day-use parking fee, but the events and activities are free. Nature walks are also available at 11:00 a.m. Thursday through Sunday; please call (831) 335-7077 for meeting place and topics.

JULY ACTIVITIES AT PESCADERO MARSH STATE NATURE RESERVE
Located north of Pescadero Rd. along Highway One (650) 879-2170

Pescadero Marsh Nature Walks
Sunday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m.
Sunday, July 20 at 1:00 p.m.
Walk among the animals and plants of the marsh and discover a unique world where the ocean and land meet. We’ll search for Western Pond Turtles, see a multitude of shorebirds, and get to know the plants that line this wetland habitat. We suggest that you dress in layers, bring binoculars, water, wear a hat and enjoy the marsh on this 2-hour excursion. Meet your park docent at the parking lot south of the bridge on Highway 1. The parking lot is just a quarter mile north of Pescadero Road.

JULY ACTIVITIES AT WILDER RANCH STATE PARK

The History of Wilder Ranch: A tour of the Historic Ranch Buildings All Saturdays and Sundays in July at 1:00 PM Discover what life was like a century or more ago on this innovative dairy ranch. The hour-long tour includes the newly renovated 1854 Meder house, the 1897 Victorian home, 1896 water-powered machine shop, barns and other historic buildings.

Living History Demonstrations
Some Saturdays and Sundays, 11:00 AM-3:00 PM History comes alive at Wilder Ranch State Park on many weekends. July 13 and 27 learn about hand quilting with master quilter Carolyn Miller 10-2pm. On Saturdays, July 12, 19 and 26 live fiddle music will be playing form 1-3 pm.

History, Nature, and Scenic Views: A Tour of the Grey Whale Ranch Area
Saturday, July 12 at 9:00 AM
This challenging guided three-hour hike will explore the natural and cultural history of the upper hills of Wilder Ranch State Park. Meet at the Wilder Ranch parking lot. Bring good walking shoes, lunch, snacks, and water. Hike is canceled if rain.

Wilder Ranch Coast Nature Walks
Saturdays, July 5, 19, 26 at 11:00 AM
On these two-hour natural history excursions you will explore the plants, animals, and geology of the spectacular coastal bluffs. Meet at the Wilder Ranch interpretive center. Bring a snack, water, binoculars, and good walking shoes. Binoculars are available to borrow.

Redwood Loop Walk
Every Saturday and Sunday in July at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
How do these grand redwoods grow to be so old? So tall? How are they important to humans? Join us for this fun and informative guided half-mile stroll through a magnificent old-growth redwood forest. Meet the famous Mother Tree, the Father of the Forest and the incredible Chimney Tree on this one-hour walk. Stroller and wheelchair accessible. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Campfire Programs
Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in July at 7:30 p.m.
Join us in our historic campfire center for an evening of song and story. Serenade the glittering stars and learn about redwood ecology, creatures of the forest or stories of the sky while relaxing in the shadows of the towering trees. Fire lighting and marshmallows at 7:30 p.m.; program begins at 8:00 p.m. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Bring a flashlight. Good dogs welcome!

Junior Rangers
Every Sunday in July at 11:00 a.m.
Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in July at 3:00 p.m. (except July 15th and 29th)
Discover the fascinating secrets of the forest. Explore, practice outdoor skills and play games as you learn about plants, animals, geology, and more. This one-hour program is designed for kids ages 7-12. Sorry parents, this program is for kids only! Please register your child 15 minutes before the program begins. Meet at the Nature Lodge.

Big Basin Nature Club
Every Sunday in July at 10:00 a.m.
Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in July at 4:30 p.m.
This fun program is designed for children ages 3-6 and their parents. Read, sing, pretend, play and explore! This half-hour program will introduce youngsters to the wonders of the redwood forest. Meet at the Nature Lodge.

The Road Less Traveled
Every Sunday in July at 12:00 noon (except Sunday, July 13)
On this dog-friendly walk, we travel on North Escape Road, a paved road closed to traffic. We tour stunning old-growth redwood groves along beautiful Opal Creek. We'll discuss redwood ecology and park history while exploring the deep shade of the redwood forest. This is a fun, easy, three-mile roundtrip walk with docent Micki Downs and her dog Spock. Bring water and meet at Park Headquarters.

Come to the Sempervirens Room next to Park Headquarters for free coffee or hot chocolate! This is a great way to start your day in Big Basin. A Big Basin docent will be happy to answer questions about the park, suggest activities and help get you going on the right trail.

North Escape Stroll
Saturday, July 12 at 12:30 p.m.
This is a dog-friendly stroll along our beautiful North Escape Road where you’ll experience the forest through touch, smell and sound. Discover the amazing acorn granaries, the fragrant Douglas-firs and the grand redwoods. Learn about the different elements that create a redwood forest. This ¾-mile stroll with docent Oscar Medina will take about an hour. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Felling the Giants
Saturday, July 12 at 11:30 a.m.
Logging was the major industry in the Santa Cruz Mountains for over 50 years. How did lumbermen cut down these tall trees? What tools did they use? Join Dan Friend, a former Ranger at Big Basin, as he demonstrates how loggers were able to fell these giants—without chain saws! Meet at Park Headquarters.

Docent Doreen Devorah will show you a less-traveled trail that takes you by Union Creek, to the Sempervirens Falls and back through the redwoods. This is a four-mile, three-hour hike. Bring water and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Wildflower Walk!
Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 am
Sunday, July 20 at 10:00 am
Join docent Scott Peden to learn to identify the companion plants of the redwood forest. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the season in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Bring along a field guide if you have one. Saturday’s walk is a four-mile, four-hour walk. Sunday’s walk is a five-mile, five-hour walk. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Meet at Park Headquarters.

Could You Survive in the Wild?
Saturday, July 19 at 12:30 p.m.
During this fun, interactive demonstration, you’ll learn what it takes to survive overnight in the wilderness. Dan Friend, a wilderness survival teacher, will lead this family friendly, hour-long program on how to be prepared in the wilderness—what to bring in your pack and what knowledge to have in your head. Bring your daypack and we’ll review the contents! Meet at Park Headquarters.

The California State Parks Junior Lifeguard program is offering its last round of swim-test tryouts Saturday, July, 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at the Simpkins Family Swim Center located of 17th Ave. in Live Oak. All new Junior Lifeguard applicants must pass a basic swim test to enroll in the summer programs offered by California State Parks. Applications for any remaining spots in Session 2 can be filed on site.

California State Parks Junior Lifeguard Program is a unique and challenging aquatic program for young people ages *6 to 16 (*age 6 Seacliff only). Promoting water safety and environmental awareness are the primary goals. Students of all abilities and skill levels may participate after passing a basic tryout.

Seacliff State Beach: Session I - June 9 to July 3, 2008 Session II - July 14 to August 8, 2008
